Featured composers for Shining A Light 2025







Join us for the UMKC Libraries’ Shining a Light Concert, featuring performances by UMKC Conservatory students on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 from 6-7 p.m. Register today for updates and reminders. FREE and open to the public.
The concert includes selections from the UMKC Music/Media Library’s Shining a Light Collection of 21st century music by composers from underrepresented groups. We invite you to this one hour concert and reception to hear fresh, new music performed by up-and-coming musicians.
The Shining a Light Collection was founded in 2020 with 55 scores and has grown to include over 1,000 scores and nearly 250 composers.

- Seven Pillars, 8. Pillar V (2021) - Andy Akiho (b. 1979). Performed by Alexander Dyer (percussion), Briley Patterson (percussion), David Oosse (percussion), Martín Mendez Higuera (percussion).
- Duft, I. Blütenstaub, II. Blühend, Flüchtig (2012) - Kaija Saariaho (1952-2023). Performed by Marie Gallardo (clarinet).
- A Little Violin Music in Memory of Elijah McClain (2020) / Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (b. 1939). Performed by Ilvina Gabrielian (violin).
- Bright Moonlight (2000) - Chen Yi (b. 1953). Performed by Yanru Chen (soprano), Chuang Li (piano).
- Hydra (2014) - Alice Gomez (b. 1960). Performed by Victoria Sewell (trumpet), Kate Johnson (trumpet), Madison Bobroff (French Horn), Katrina Blumberg (trombone), Michael Marrone (tuba).
- For Marianne (2010) - Joan Tower (b. 1938). Performed by Bekah Walker (flute).
- Come As You Are, I. Lift My Eyes, IV. Lift My Hands (2020) - Steven Banks (b. 1993) Performed by Tre Wherry (saxophone), Dan Velicer (piano).
- At the Kansas City Chinese New Year Concert, III. Blue Dragon Sword Dance (2003) - Chen Yi (b. 1953). Performed by UMKC Graduate Fellowship String Quartet: Qiufan Chen (violin), Caroline Beckman (violin), Chung-Wen Lee (viola), Seungchan Song (cello).
