Roos Read!

The 2023-2024 RoosRead selection is I Never Thought of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times by Mónica Guzmán.

RoosRead is an intercampus initiative from the Office of the Chancellor and facilitated by the Division of Diversity and Inclusion that encourages people to read a recommended title that showcases a distinctive voice, perspective or theme and engage in discussions intended to generate action toward change. Students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and community members are welcome to participate in this collective learning experience.

Access the book through the library

Borrow a copy of I Never Thought of it That Way from the UMKC Library, or read the eBook version online. Links to purchase your own copy of the book are on the RoosRead webpage. You may also find a copy of the book available from a Kansas City area public library, as a book, ebook, or audiobook.

Form a reading group

The UMKC Library has four book discussion bags available to borrow. Each bag contains: five copies of I Never Thought of it That Way and a discussion guide with questions covering each chapter of the book. Visit the first floor Service Desk in Miller Nichols Library to borrow one of the kits for two weeks; borrowing is available to UMKC students, staff, or faculty.

Participate in the library discussion series

Each month the Library will share a reflection on a chapter or two of I Never Thought of it That Way. Roos Read participants are invited to read, reflect, and discuss what you’re learning in the comments section of each post.

First Semester Experience credit is available for engaging with the library’s RoosRead discussion series! Visit RooGroups each month to find the live RoosRead Discussion event and follow the instructions there.
