Distance students live outside of the Kansas City Metro area, which is defined as:
- Missouri counties: Platte, Clay, Ray, Jackson, Cass
- Kansas counties: Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, Miami
Every student is an online student, but Online students primarily take online or hybrid classes and are not always (or ever) on campus.
Obtaining Library Materials as a Distance/Online Student
- All students have access to UMKC electronic resources, including scholarly journals, e-books, and databases.
- Request scans of articles/chapters from UMKC Libraries’ print materials or from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan and they will be delivered electronically.
- Loan periods on physical materials (books, DVDs, etc.) for Distance/Online students are the same as all UMKC students.
- Online students living in the Kansas City Metro area can request physical materials through UMKC and the UM System, MOBIUS, and Interlibrary Loan and pick them up at the Miller Nichols Library or the Health Sciences Library.
For Distance/Online students living in Missouri, outside the Kansas City Metro area:
- Pick-up UMKC/UM System, and MOBIUS physical materials from the closest MOBIUS pick-up location
- For other materials, work with Interlibrary Loan services and collections at local libraries whenever possible. Most public libraries offer Interlibrary Loan.
- If a local library cannot meet your need, indicate that you are a distance/online student in your Interlibrary Loan account, and request that your materials be mailed to you (U.S. addresses only).
- Note: you will be responsible for adhering to due dates and for paying return postage to UMKC Libraries.

Benefit eligible retired staff and faculty (not Emeritus):
- Have the same UMKC borrowing privileges as current faculty & staff, but do not have Interlibrary Loan privileges.
- Can search the library catalog using the Guest Access option but cannot request materials from other campuses. Contact the Circulation Desk at 816-235-1526 or circulation@umkc.edu for assistance
- Due to migration to a new system, the MOBIUS service is not currently available to retired faculty and staff. Please contact your local public library regarding interlibrary loan options.

Public Lockers for Students
The Miller Nichols Library has lockers available for 14-day checkout to UMKC students. The lockers are located on the first floor with 12 lockers in the elevator hallway and 16 lockers in the Robot Café area. Each locker has electrical outlets, allowing students to charge laptops and cell phones. Keys to the lockers may be checked out at the First Floor Service Desk.
Due to high use, there are no renewals of lockers; the locker key must be returned by the due date. Patron can check out a locker the next day pending availability. Overdue lockers will accrue an overdue fine of $1 per day.
Any UMKC faculty or staff member who has a Volker or Hospital Hill campus department delivery address may request that their library books be sent directly to their campus address instead of having to pick the books up at the library.
- From the Catalog: Depending on your office location, select the office delivery pickup location for you campus.
- From Interlibrary Loan: If the item is available for office delivery, change the delivery method from PICKUP to Office Delivery.
Details
Not all items are eligible for office delivery. Oversized items, items with short loan periods, or items that would sustain damage during mailing will need to be picked up.
Once the library has processed your item, office deliveries take 2-3 days to arrive at your campus office address. If you have not received your office delivery, check the person in your building or department who handles the mail.
Patron Responsibility
When you request a book to be sent directly to your office, you are taking responsibility for the book from the moment we check it out on your library record until the time you return it to the library.
Returning Your Books
Mail your items back to the Miller Nichols Library (via Campus or U.S. Mail), drop them in the book drop on the north side of Miller Nichols Library inside the first set of glass doors (available 24 hours a day), or return them to a book drop at the Miller Nichols Library or the Health Sciences Library.
