General Policies

Guest Researcher accounts are to be only used by the person(s) to whom they are originally assigned.

  • Members agree not to share their UMKC Guest Researcher account information with others.
  • For those with institutional memberships, members agree not to use their Guest Researcher account to acquire items or services for anyone except their employer.

Members must self-identify as Guest Researcher Program members when contacting the library for service outside of the online request system.

Members are responsible for the use of library materials and any obligations incurred. Overdue materials or nonpayment of any charges will result in immediate suspension of all privileges. If memberships are purchased with corporate funds, the company assumes liability for all obligations incurred.

Making Requests

All requests must be submitted via the online request system using your assigned username and password.

  • Requests made via email, telephone, mail, fax, or in person will not be accepted.
  • If extensive citation verification is needed to fulfill your request, you may be billed for Research Service.

You may make requests for items in a multitude of formats: articles, books, microfilm, audio/visual media, etc.

  • Color scans are available upon request and are only available for electronic delivery.
Research Service is:
  • Subject to limitations imposed by licensing agreements on certain resources;
  • Should not be construed as legal or medical advice;
  • Provides no annotation of articles;
  • Available on a limited basis;
  • Contingent upon librarians' time availability.
By submitting requests through our system, you agree to our Statement of Copyright & Financial Responsiblity:

"By submitting this form, you agree to comply with copyright law and to assume financial responsibility for any fees charged that do not exceed the designated maximum cost on this request. You also agree to assume financial responsibility for any damage, loss, or fines assessed on this material. The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve the violation of copyright law."

Delivery Options

All article and chapter requests will be delivered electronically to the email address associated with the account. Physical items may be picked up or delivered. Some items may be restricted for use in the library only.

Specifying a Maximum Cost

In order to submit a request, you must specify a maximum cost you are willing to spend. We will automatically supply the requested material if the cost of doing so does not exceed your maximum cost.

If the cost of supplying the requested material will exceed the maximum cost, you will be contacted via the email address associated with the account. You will then have the option to increase your maximum cost or cancel the order.

Pick-up and Return Items

  • A member may authorize another person or courier service to pick up physical materials to check out. These may include UMKC circulating items as well as items borrowed through the interlibrary loan service.
  • Items must be returned by their due date to avoid being invoiced for item replacement charges.
Items may be picked up at and returned to the following UMKC Libraries:
  • Miller Nichols Library, 800 East 51st Street, Kansas City, MO 64110. The service desk is on the 1st floor of the building.
  • Health Sciences Library, 2411 Holmes Street, Kansas City, MO 64108. The Health Sciences Library is on the 2nd floor of the School of Medicine Building.
  • Please do not return materials to the UMKC Law Library. They are currently not affiliated with the Guest Researcher Program.
