Diversity in Library Collections Policy

Diversity is one of the core values of UMKC and of University Libraries. As such, it is important to the library and its users that the collection embody diversity in subject matter, in authorship, and in attention to the diverse populations served by the library.  Every effort is made to ensure that the materials the library purchases and licenses reflect that diversity.

UMKC University Libraries also endorses Standard #4 from the Diversity Standards: Cultural Competency for Academic Libraries statement adopted by the Association of College & Research libraries in 2012. It reads: “Librarians and library staff shall develop collections and provide programs and services that are inclusive of the needs of all persons in the community the library serves.”

In addition to applying sensitivity to diversity to everyday collection decisions, every effort is made to secure additional funding for initiatives that will build the collection with an eye towards specific diversity objectives.
