“Passion to Compassion” is an exhibition of 20 abstract expressionist paintings by Noshaba Bakht, UMKC Education student. We are delighted to have these works installed in the First Floor Gallery in the main UMKC Library, as the inaugural exhibit in our new Student Art Exhibits Program. Bakht’s colorful and texturally dimensional paintings include many layers of different media, primarily oil paint. The exhibit includes paintings that communicate the impression of trees and cityscapes from Bakht’s native city of Lahore in Pakistan. Bakht says of her style,
I do not like to copy the objects and subjects beyond the reason of understanding and am an abstract expressionist, I express my emotions regarding a theme with color and brush strokes in a randomly organized way. I enjoy the process of intuition to start the work on. I then build on the details, and make intuitively driven changes, which are part or whole of the original painting. It is a challenge with its pitfalls but is always adventurous and gratifying! The artwork is finished with a sense of satisfaction and done when a connection is built, and resources for a particular painting have extinguished.
Noshaba Bakht is a PhD student in the department of Education at UMKC. Originally from Pakistan, she was born and raised in the heart of Punjab in the ancient city of Lahore. Bakht describes herself as an artist by accident. “I realized that it was my call, but it was hidden in me due to my responsibilities and interests in academics elsewhere rather than art. Art is a great motivator and an outlet for me.”
