Illuminating a Musical Legacy: The Barney Kessel Project
Now through September 01, 2020
Illuminating a Musical Legacy: The Barney Kessel Project is a new online exhibit available through the UMKC Libraries. This exhibit was created by students in the Advanced Research and Bibliography course through the Conservatory and explores the music, pedagogy and legacy of legendary guitarist Barney Kessel (October 17, 1923–May 6, 2004). The exhibit describes his life and legacy through the use of digitized materials from LaBudde Special Collections.
The exhibit also includes a transcript of an interview the students conducted with Barney's widow, Phyllis Kessel. As described by Chuck Haddix, host of The Fish Fry, "Drawing deep from the Barney Kessel Collection, these students have created a wonderful tribute to Kessel, one of the most influential jazz guitarists of all time. This exhibit sets the standard for digital scholarship."
