Shining a Light on International Music

Music exists in every culture and is one of the most treasured ways we connect with and learn about each other. Melodies from our childhoods give us comfort, the anthems of our youths give us strength, and, no matter how far we have traveled, a familiar tune can fill us with hope and welcome memories.

The UMKC Libraries invite you to explore our collections for music that reminds us all of our homes and cultures.

Discover collections of streaming music from around the world:

The Shining a Light collection of classical music focuses on twenty-first century music as a means of lifting up primarily living, currently active composers from groups that have been historically underrepresented. You'll find music by non-white composers from various racial, ethnic, and cultural heritages, and music by women.

All of this music is available in the UMKC Libraries collections. Some will require you to log in with your UMKC username and password to listen.
