Collage of various composers of this collection

Earlier this month, the UMKC Music/Media Library launched the "Shining a Light" digital exhibit. The purpose of this exhibit is to bring awareness and access to music of the 21st century by composers who identify with historically underrepresented groups in Western classical music - people who are not dead white men.

With an Inclusive Excellence grant from the University of Missouri, the Library was able to purchase a number of scores and introduce many new composers to our collection. We also included already available works in the collection that met the guidelines of the Shining a Light project: 21st century works by composers from historically unrepresented groups.

For this display, we've selected examples from the composers new to our collection, as well as some of the other composers added to the exhibit, to showcase the compositional range and brilliance of these artists. We hope these works find a place in your research and music-making.

A resource list is available at the link below. We've also added many of the works to our "Shining a Light" playlist on SoundCloud.
