Sound Archives Receives Gift for Student Work

We’re excited to announce that the UMKC Libraries’ Marr Sound Archives received a gift to support student employment. The Marr Sound Archives Student Employment Fund was established by Butch and Christy Rigby, both alumni and local entrepreneurs. Butch worked with Gaylord Marr, a Communication Studies professor at UMKC whose gift of sound recordings formed the foundation of the Sound Archives. Butch’s experiences working as a student with Gaylord and Olga Marr inspired this generous gift, which they hope will serve as a foundation for a new endowment to ensure ongoing support.

The Libraries wish to extend our thanks to Butch and Christy for their gift. We are grateful that you enjoyed your time working with the Marrs and found a way to offer similarly valuable working experiences to future students. The gift will fund an additional student worker in the Marr Sound Archives, to honor the ongoing legacy of Gaylord and Olga Marr who were committed to preservation, access, and promoting the research value of sound recordings. These additional funds will support the Archives in achieving the Marrs’ goals.

The Marr Sound Archives is now recruiting for a student employee on this fund. This student will be working to save our cultural heritage by preserving and digitizing historical audio recordings on rapidly degrading formats. If you are interested in contributing to the Marr Sound Archives Student Employment Fund, click the link below.
