LaBudde Special Collections offers instruction to create collections-based learning experiences and build primary source literacy skills. We offer a variety of instruction including introductory “what is special collections and archives?” sessions, basic archival research orientations, and specialized sessions that incorporate project-based resources and hands-on activities.

Introductory
Session

This “What is Special Collections and Archives?” session orientates the students on where LaBudde Special Collections is located, how to request and use the resources, and expose the students to distinctive primary sources unique to UMKC and the Kansas City community.

Archival
Research Orientation

We provide archival research sessions for in-depth use of LaBudde Special Collections’ finding aids, catalog, and collections. This session on resource discovery is typically tailored to a specific course subject or assignment.

Project-Based Specialization Session

We offer various opportunities to partner and collaborate with LaBudde Special Collections on unique research projects from building physical exhibits to transcribing 17th Century legal documents written in Latin and Old English. Generally these sessions are longer than one class period, involve an initial consultation with a special collections librarian, and advance planning prior to the semester.

Room 325

Classes are taught on the 3rd floor of Miller Nichols Library in room 325, next door to LaBudde Special Collections; this classroom provides tables, chairs, stationed computer, and projector. Confirmation of requested times depends on staff and space availability. Evening and weekend requests may be considered, but cannot be guaranteed.

When completing the form for library instruction, we ask that you provide as much information as possible about your needs or expectations so that we can serve you better.
