Job Description
This position works at the Music/Media desk and the ground floor of the Miller Nichols Library, reports to the Head, Music/Media, and supervises the 15-20 Music/Media student assistants. This position is in charge of the Music/Media area and ground floor during work shifts, including assisting patrons and being responsible for opening the Music/Media Library Monday-Friday. This position works with the Circulation billing manager, maintains the Music/Media reserves collection, performs Music/Media acquisitions tasks, oversees supplies and media playback equipment ordering and maintenance, and performs other Music/Media duties.
Job Duties:
- Provides friendly, efficient assistance to patrons, including circulation, answering questions, and assisting with printing, scanning, and basic production software issues in the Music/Media lab, including lifting paper reams, stooping and bending to troubleshoot printer problems, etc.
- Oversees Music/Media desk functions and assists/oversees student assistants in providing services at this desk, communicating effectively with library patrons, supervisor, and other library staff.
- Directly supervises the 15-20 Music/Media student assistants, including hiring, scheduling, training, oversight, timesheets, evaluations, terminations, and consulting with other Music/Media employees on student assistant performance and needs during evening and weekend shifts. Monitors student assistant budget. Assists with tasks including pushing carts of library materials weighing up to 200 lbs., reading call number labels, and shelving items at floor level and up to six feet high in areas which may include small to moderate quantities of dust or mold, etc.
- Serves as the senior Music/Media staff member on duty during work shifts.
- Maintains the safety and security of the Miller Nichols Library ground floor, including the MNL north entrance, during scheduled shifts, collaborating with the security officer assigned to building, Circulation Services, and UMKC Police to maintain safe, secure environment for library patrons.
- Works with Circulation billing manager regarding lost items and other patron circulation problems related to music and media items.
- Performs portions of acquisitions process for music and media items, including researching scores, recordings, books, and other materials for purchase, creating electronic order records, and finding prices for lost items.
- Maintains the Music/Media reserves collection.
- Orders and maintains supplies and media playback equipment.
- Performs portions of resource sharing process for music and media materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Professional development and service:
- Participates on appropriate committees and professional development as defined by and with the approval of the Head, Music/Media.
- Maintains sufficient expertise in skills and proficiencies required by the position.
Shift
This position works Monday-Friday and is responsible for supervising the Music/Media desk and ground floor during all work shifts, and for opening the library Monday-Friday. The position will occasionally cover other shifts in the absence of other employees. Any permanent schedule changes must be approved by the Supervisor. Due to job responsibilities of staffing an in-person service desk and supervising onsite student assistants, routine remote work is rare for this position. This position’s hours are Monday-Friday, 7am-3pm.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- One to two years’ experience in a library setting
- Supervisory experience
- Customer service experience
- Music reference service experience
- Knowledge of music and the performing arts at a level usually acquired through formal study or education, including the ability to read music
- Knowledge of music score formats, editions, and publishers
Anticipated Hiring Range
Anticipated starting salary between $17.70 and $20.00 commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
