Sr Library Information Specialist

This position works in the Circulation Services Department and reports to the Head of Circulation Services. This position works Tuesday through Saturday and is responsible for closing the library on Friday and Saturday.  The position provides circulation assistance and basic reference assistance. The primary area of responsibility is supervision of the Circulation Services student assistants (15-20 student assistants). The position provides basic reference/research assistance and works with Campus Police to maintain building security during the weekend/evening shift. The position performs advanced technical, public service, and administrative duties requiring a high level of decision-making, judgment, and independence. It requires a broad understanding of the academic library context and of circulation work. This position plays a major role in the development of departmental policies and procedures and may write policies for the department. This position functions independently, receiving general guidance, limited supervision, and periodic reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to two years’ experience in a library setting and/or in an applicable academic setting.
  • Successful customer service experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Experience answering basic reference questions

Full Time/Part Time

Fully-benefit-eligible, 40-hours per week (1.0 FTE), staff position.

Salary

$16.32 to $17.50 per hour commensurate with experience, education and internal equity. 

Plus eligible for $.70 per hour shift differential for any shift of 5 hours or more starting after 2pm.

  • Schedule
    • This position is responsible for closing the library on Friday and Saturday.  Works Tuesday – Thursday 11 am – 7 pm, Friday & Saturday 2:15 – 10:15 pm.  Hours vary during intersession and summer session based on library open hours. Works closing schedule during intersession (4 weeks Dec/Jan, 3 weeks May, 3 weeks Aug): Monday – Thursday 11:15 am – 7:15 pm, Friday  9:15 am – 5:15 pm. During 8 week summer session works Tuesday – Thursday 11:00 am-7:00 pm, Friday & Saturday closing schedule 10:15 am – 6:15 pm.   Subject to night and weekend work if needed (may be asked to cover occasional closing shifts in absence of other department staff).
    • Any permanent schedule changes must be approved by supervisor.

  • Flexible Work Arrangements
    • This position is responsible for closing the library and the circulation department on Friday & Saturday during the academic semesters and 8 week summer session, for assisting patrons via the library’s main phone line, and for assisting patrons at the First Floor Service Desk. The position may choose whether to take a 1 hour meal break or work a shorter day per the Libraries’ Rest Break Policy. Anything outside of this regular schedule is considered a Flexible Work Arrangement.  
    • The UMKC University Libraries support flexible work arrangements in keeping with the Flexible Work Arrangement Policy. Flexible work arrangements should support the mission, goals and functional role of the employee, department and university. Due to job responsibilities of staffing an in-person service desk and in-directly supervising on-site student assistants, routine remote work is rare for this position.
