The Head of LaBudde Special Collections is responsible for the direction, administration, operations, and long-term planning for the Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections. The position provides guidance and support for print-based archival processing and collections management for the Special Collections and Archives (SCA) Division. The position facilitates access to archival and rare book collections by providing expertise on archival arrangement, description, bibliographic access, preservation, storage, and security of special collections materials held in the UMKC University Libraries. The position oversees collections management activities by overseeing departmental workflows and collaborating with fellow department heads on establishing SCA divisional priorities and policies. In addition to these responsibilities, the position monitors trends and developments in rare book and archives management and recommends appropriate adoption and implementation of new technologies and methods for access, organization, and preservation. This position is a 12-month, non-tenure track, ranked benefit-eligible faculty librarian appointment, has supervisory responsibilities, and reports to the Assistant Dean of Special Collections and Archives.
The UMKC University Libraries are seeking a curious and collaborative person to join us as a Teaching and Learning Librarian. This position will contribute to the instructional and reference programs within the library, particularly in support of the School of Education, Social Work and Psychological Sciences. Teaching and Learning Librarians work in a team-based environment to ensure that students from all backgrounds develop information literacy skills in their fields. We are a supportive and evolving group situated in the main library at a mid-sized university in the heart of Kansas City’s vibrant, socially-conscious, entrepreneurial community. This position is a 12-month, non-tenure track, ranked benefit-eligible faculty librarian appointment and reports to the Head of Teaching & Learning.
This .75 FTE position works in the Circulation Services Department and reports to the SR Library Information Specialist Late Night  Supervisor. This position is responsible for closing the library Tuesday through Saturday. The position provides circulation assistance and basic reference help.

Digital Production Internship

The Digital Production Intern will conduct research and practical explorations to develop user documentation which will enhance creative media production technology in the Digital Collaboration Studio’s Creative Media Lab and Recording Studio. They’ll have the opportunity to learn recording and podcast software and hardware, record instructional videos and podcasts, and learn about personal digital archiving and micropublishing technology and services. They may also assist Library faculty and staff in the Recording Studio and at the Service Desk as needed. The intern will be supervised and mentored by the Head of Digital Scholarship Services with oversight from the Digital Collaboration Specialist. With guidance of full-time staff mentors, the intern will cultivate skills that support the intern’s professional goals while performing the following duties:

  • Research use of existing audio/visual production technology in the studio
  • Research use of new zine creation technology in the Creative Media Lab
  • Create documentation to help users interact with the technology, including instructional videos
  • Research best practices relating to media production and personal digital archiving, including, but not limited to legacy media digitization, audio/visual production, art creation, zine making
  • Research and develop documentation relating to accessibility standards for audio/visual production and digital content development
  • Administrative and other duties as required

Scheduling

Students are expected to work regular shifts of at least 2 consecutive hours between 10:00AM – 5:00PM M-F.  Students are required to work 10 hours per week.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled at least part time at UMKC in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and interest in further developing their business and web writing skills
  • Proficiency in word processing software (i.e. Word or Google Docs)
  • Have a strong attention to detail
  • Self-motivated problem-solver

Preferred Qualifications

  • Class Rank of Junior or Senior
  • Pursuing a degree in Media, Art and Design

The Health Sciences Library is located on the 2nd floor of the School of Medicine building at 2411 Holmes Street, Kansas City, MO 64108.

Job description: Under the supervision of the LIS Sr Student Supervisor, the Evening/Weekend Supervisor, and other Access support staff, provides service to Health Sciences Library patrons and staff.

Job duties: Scheduling of specific work assignments is determined by departmental demands, and at the discretion of the supervisor, not worker preference.

Off-desk duties: Shelving accurately. Shelf reading and shelf cleaning.

Staffing the Service Desk: Assists patrons in simple searches, web page usage, and reference; is punctual to arrive when scheduled, and may open and close library on schedule. Performs other miscellaneous duties when needed.

LaBudde Special  Collections is located on the 3rd floor of Miller Nichols Library at 800 E 51st Street, Kansas City, MO 64110.

Hours of operation are 9:00 a.m and 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Student assistants are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Flexible work arrangements are available at the supervisor’s discretion.

Job description: Student assistants provide public access and reference support for LaBudde Special Collections and the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA) for researchers and patrons from any and all communities. This entails searching for, retrieving, and shelving manuscript materials and rare books as well as the inventory and processing of archival collections. Student assistants perform additional tasks as assigned including scanning projects and Reading Room maintenance (cleaning).

Physical effort: Minimal/infrequent physical effort. Must be able to lift a weight of approximately 30lbs for some manuscript boxes.

Scheduling: Hiring and scheduling in the Music/Media Library will depend on hours specifically needed. Student Assistants are required to work nights and weekends. Student Assistants are required to work during finals week and must be planning to work the full year, not just a semester. Student assistants are required to work a minimum of 10 hours a week.
