Student assistants for the Administrative Office perform basic clerical tasks, including data entry and processing, answering phones, providing customer service, and serving as backup in our Receiving Room. We are looking for applicants who have good judgment, are meticulous, and who are comfortable working with people but also with numbers/spreadsheets.

Scheduling: Hiring and scheduling in Miller Nichols Library will depend on hours specifically needed. It may be necessary to work evenings and weekends. Student Assistants are required to work their set schedule for the entire semester, including during finals week. Intersession & Summer semester work hours are available to those who are enrolled and working in the subsequent semester. Student assistants are required to work a minimum of 15 hours a week.
Job description: Under the supervision of the Circulation Services Student Assistant Supervisor, the Evening/Weekend Supervisor, and other full-time staff, provides services to Miller Nichols Library patrons and staff.
Job attitude: All students are to display an attitude toward work which fosters a supportive work atmosphere; treat others with courtesy, respect, and tact; present, accept, and act upon constructive suggestions and criticism; deal with stress in a responsible manner; and accept and adjust to change in the work environment.
Job duties: Duties include but are not limited to assisting patrons at the First Floor Service Desk, assisting patrons with printing/scanning issues, shelving books, placing requests and picking materials from the automated storage facility, scanning articles for interlibrary loan requests. The scheduling of specific work assignments is determined by the department needs on a given shift and are assigned at the discretion of the supervisor on duty.

Under the supervision of the Senior Library Information Specialist and/or other departmental staff, the student employee will be responsible for the following regular tasks: opening and routing mail, receiving, processing, and labeling new material, and updating records. The work will involve searching and editing data records according to library standards, creating items and applying call numbers, barcodes, etc. as needed, and packing and sorting materials for transport. The student employee will also participate in various projects related to the management of print and/or electronic journals, newspapers, and magazines as well as additional tasks and projects as assigned by the supervisor based on the needs of the department.
Under the supervision of the LIS Sr Student Supervisor, the Evening/Weekend Supervisor, and other Access support staff, provides service to Health Sciences Library patrons and staff.
Off-desk duties: Shelving accurately. Shelf reading and shelf cleaning.
Staffing the Service Desk:Assists patrons in simple searches, web page usage, and reference; is punctual to arrive when scheduled, and may open and close library on schedule. Performs other miscellaneous duties when needed.
Graduate student assistants provide public access and reference support for LaBudde Special Collections, the Starr Women’s Hall of Fame Archive, and the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA) for researchers and patrons from all communities. This entails searching for, retrieving, and shelving manuscript materials and rare books as well as the inventory and processing of archival collections. Student assistants perform additional tasks as assigned including scanning projects and Reading Room maintenance (cleaning).
This is a graduate level position that requires the applicant to have a bachelor’s degree in their field and be enrolled as a student at UMKC with at least one credit hour.
Student assistants must provide public service and assist with basic reference questions and material requests; accurately search, retrieve and shelve sound recordings in a timely manner; inventory and process sound recordings and other archival materials; perform additional tasks as assigned, including collection maintenance, data entry, audio transcription, physical preservation of audio-visual media as well as prep work for digital preservation; some basic manual labor, heavy lifting, and moving of collections.
Perform digital transfers and provide metadata for archival audio recordings. Some public service and assistance with reference requests will be required.
The audio engineer student assistant will perform digital transfers of audio recordings to archival standards. This entails working with analog audio formats, a digital audio workstation, and creating metadata. This position may also provide public service and assist with reference requests when needed.
Must be a UMKC Conservatory student. Student assistants will provide public service and assist with basic reference questions; accurately search, retrieve and shelve library materials in a timely manner; perform additional tasks as assigned, including collection maintenance, data entry, some basic manual labor.
