First Generation College Student Celebration

Writing our First Gen Story
November 10-14, 2025

November 8 is First-Generation College Celebration Day! UMKC defines a first-generation college student as any student whose parents or guardians did not receive a bachelor’s degree in the United States.

Bedazzle a Book!

Thursday, November 13, 2025 | 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. | Miller Nichols Library, first floor Theater

You bring your favorite book, we will provide the supplies, and together we will bedazzle some of the stories that mean the most to us. This event is open to any UMKC student! Hosted by UMKC Libraries and First Gen Roo Scholars in honor of National First Generation Celebration Week.

Read

Read a book by an author who was the first in their family to graduate college, or a book about the first gen college experience. eBooks require a UMKC username and password.

Participate

National First Generation Celebration Week events are open all UMKC students, not just First Gen Roos! Find more events in RooGroups.

Line drawings of people spring from the pages of an open book with the text "I made it," "I am not alone," and "I am just the beginning."
