Library Instruction

UMKC Libraries offers instruction in developing the information literacy skills needed to locate, analyze, and evaluate information. Our classroom at Miller Nichols Library can accommodate classes with a maximum of 30 students. For larger classes, a librarian can come to your classroom. Request an instruction session for your class.

Placing Items on Reserve

Reserves are materials to be used by students in your course, made available by the library.

  • After making a course reserve request, allow up to 1 week for the library to process reserves before assigning students to use them.
  • Materials are removed from physical reserve and personal copies returned to the instructor at the end of each semester unless otherwise arranged.

Purchase Requests

If you would like the library to purchase an item so that it may be used in one of your classes, please use the Purchase Request Form. The library does not buy textbooks for the sole purpose of serving as required course materials. If you need materials solely for your own research, use interlibrary loan. UMKC has an e-book preferred policy.

Granting Access to your Library Account

Instructors can complete the Proxy Account Application Form (PDF) to grant co-instructors or student teachers temporary access to their library account on their behalf. Read the full Proxy Account Policy for further details.

Office Delivery of Books

Any UMKC faculty or staff member who has a Volker or Hospital Hill campus department delivery address may request that their library books be sent directly to their campus address instead of having to pick the books up at the library. Read the full Office Delivery Policy for further details.

  • From the Catalog: Depending on your office location, select the UMKC Office Delivery pickup location for your campus.
  • From Interlibrary Loan: If the item is available for office delivery delivery, change the delivery method from PICKUP to office delivery.
