As part of International Education Week, the UMKC Libraries are partnering with the International Student Affairs Office to host a cultural celebration focusing on countries of East Asia, from which many of our international students join us.

In celebration of our community of international students at UMKC, learn about the cultures of China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan through a series of speakers, performances, and authentic cuisine.

Join us on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 from 2:00pm – 4:30pm on the first floor of the UMKC Library in the iX Theatre as we celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, and art of East Asia. Stop by any time between 2 and 4:30 to catch one of the following presentations or performances!

Performances and presentations, 2:15- 4:15

  • Presentation: Dr. Jeoung Min Lee, K-Beauty in Korea
  • Performance: Seungchan Song, UMKC student, performing Korean music on cello. Isang Yun: Glissees, movement 3, and Giovanni Sollima: Lamentatio.
  • Presentation: Dr. Mei-Ling Shyu and Dr. Shu-Ching Chen, Night Street Markets in Taiwan
  • Performance: Kwan Leung Ling & Yingting Liu, UMKC students, performing Chinese folk music on trumpet (suona) & piano. Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix.
  • Presentation: Dr. Andrew Granade, The Sound of Tradition: Music in Japanese Theatre
  • Performance: Evan Minsk & Clara Patten, UMKC students, performing music on french horn & piano. Youth Walz, Song of Liu Liu, Music of La Mi Hei, You Give Me A Rose, Sonata from Mongolia, The Sun Shines Everywhere.
  • Presentation: Dr. Zhongjin Li and Dr. Andrew Bergerson, From Kung Fu to Taiji: A Journey Through China’s Martial Heritage
  • Performance: Jinghui Wang, UMKC student, performing Chinese folk music on flute & guitar. Moon River – guitar/voice. Jasmine Flower (莫莉花) – guitar/voice intro, then flute.
