Join the Mid-Continent Public Library on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 6:30 pm for Confronting the Straight State: The Struggle for LGBTQ Civil Rights in Kansas City with Stuart Hinds, Curator of Special Collections and Archives at UMKC Libraries, and Austin Williams, UMKC graduate director of the award-winning documentary The Ordinance Project.
“From the formation of the Phoenix Society for Individual Freedom to the recent creation of the city’s LGBTQ Commission, the first of its kind in the state of Missouri, activists have continued to build upon the work of those who came before them, each marked with their own series of challenges, setbacks, victories, and defeats. This program is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.“
This program is part of a bicentennial storytelling series, State of Stories, that Mid-Continent Public Library is hosting to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Missouri’s statehood.
