Featured composers for Shining A Light 2024
Join us for the UMKC Libraries’ Shining a Light Concert, featuring performances by UMKC Conservatory students on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 6-7 p.m. Register today for updates and reminders. FREE and open to the public.
The concert includes selections from the UMKC Music/Media Library’s Shining a Light Collection of 21st century music by composers from underrepresented groups. We invite you to this one hour concert and reception to hear fresh, new music performed by up-and-coming musicians.
The Shining a Light Collection was founded in 2020 with 55 scores and has grown to include nearly 200 composers and over 900 musical works.
Program
- Logan Promenades (2014) - Shulamit Ran (b. 1949). Performed by Zoe Meins (trumpet) and Caleb Shepard (trumpet).
- The Flight of the Brave Chicken: Ode to Nina (2018) - Shulamit Ran (b. 1949). Performed by Elena Collins (clarinet) and Leslie Hisman (flute).
- Freeing the Caged Bird. I. Maya Angelou & II. Sara Teasdale (2007) - Barbara Harbach (b. 1946). Performed by UMKC Rootet: Justin Kraus (flute), Kailey Hrencecin (oboe), Evelynn Esquivel (clarinet), Jonathon Nickell (bassoon), and Michael Brown (horn).
- Ji-Dong-Nuo (2006) - Chen Yi (b. 1953). Performed by Jiaqi Wang (piano).
- Chinese Ancient Dances for B-flat Clarinet and Piano (2006) - Chen Yi (b. 1953). Performed by Luke Vasilarakos (clarinet) and James Li (piano).
- Quatuor de Saxophones, Movements I & VI (2007) - Ida Gotkovsky (b. 1933). Performed by Vent Quartet: Dawson Coleman (saxophone), Blake Adams (saxophone), Jonathon Nickell (saxophone), and Davis Hale (saxophone).
