Compositions in the Cosmos

Astronaut floating in space listening to music

Now Through July, 2024 | Miller Nichols Library, Ground Floor

Journey across the universe to discover how musicians have employed a fusion of the familiar and the strange to compose the cosmos. Explore the audiation of a starburst in Margaret Brouwer’s Stardance, or the motion of a planet in Kotoka Suzuki’s Orbit.

Fall into orbit around our display to see some out of this world films. Take a look at how music and sci-fi movies collide, providing a background to the imagined space exploration.

From Sun Ra to Coltrane, Star Wars to Space Cowboys, the hopes, fears, and inspirations of outer space have been portrayed in art. Browse our collection to learn more!

The Music/Media library has scores, books, CDs, DVDs and online resources from the void above.
