Community Borrowing

On-site use of collections and basic reference assistance is available to anyone. Using audiovisual materials requires a valid photo ID. For research related to Special Collections, Marr Sound Archives, or UMKC University Archives, please contact those departments directly. To borrow materials, please register at the Miller Nichols Library First Floor Service Desk.

  • Guest Borrower Program

    Guests of the library who are at least 18 years old and wish to check out library materials may join the Guest Borrower Program. Join at the Miller Nichols Library First Floor Service Desk.

  • Guest Researcher Program

    For a fee, individual researchers not affiliated with UMKC and groups such as law firms, businesses, and other organizations with specialized information and research needs can obtain services and materials through UMKC Libraries. The mix of services is tailored to the particular requirements of our clients and reflects the Libraries' commitment to the Kansas City area.

  • Friends of the Library

    Friends contributing at least $50 annually through the Friends of the Library may receive borrowing privileges. Eligible members wishing to activate their account may do so by contacting the Libraries’ Administrative Office at (816) 235-1531.

  • UMKC Alumni Association

    Paid members of the UMKC Alumni Association have limited checkout privileges.

  • Reciprocal Borrowing

    Students, faculty, and staff at Kansas City area colleges and universities and at MOBIUS member libraries are eligible for Reciprocal Borrowing with other libraries. Most colleges and universities in the Kansas City area are participants. University ID is required.

  • High School Students

    Area high school students enrolled in the High School College Program can also arrange to check out books.

  • Courtesy Card Programs

    The Courtesy Card Program provides direct on-site borrowing privileges for students, faculty and staff at participating academic/research libraries in the Kansas City area.

  • Area Libraries

    A compilation of area libraries including academic, public and research libraries, regional and worldwide.
