New Assistant Dean of Special Collections & Archives

Kelly Spring

We’d like to welcome Kelly Spring to UMKC Libraries as our new Assistant Dean of Special Collections and Archives! Kelly comes to us from Eastern Carolina University where she was a Library Professor and Head of Manuscripts and Digital Curation. She has a broad range of experience in special collections and archives at several institutions, including implementing  a born-digital archiving program, exploring ethical use of AI in archives, and grant funded projects to support community archiving. Kelly worked across units in a variety of projects, giving her a broad perspective that will serve her well in this new role Additionally, Kelly has significant leadership experience in both her daily work and in her service to the profession. She has served as a mentor in a variety of organizations, is an active grant writer, and is the author of Project Management for Archivists: Befriending Your Backlog.

In her new role, Kelly will provide leadership for the Special Collections and Archives Division, overseeing its operations while advancing research rooted in the collections. The division consists of the Marr Sound Archives, LaBudde Special Collections, the UMKC University Archives, and the Digital Projects and Cataloging & Resource Management departments. The assistant dean supports primary source research, special collections access, digital exhibits and projects, experiential learning, and campus and external community engagement.

In Kelly’s own words, she notes:

“I’ve taken a wonderfully winding path to libraries. I started out studying architecture, which taught me how to see structure, pattern, and possibility! These skills turned out to be surprisingly useful once I wandered (quite by accident) into archival work. I began as a research assistant and have now spent more than twenty years in archives, rare books, and digital curation. Before all of that, I spent a few years as a flight attendant, which gave me thick skin, a sense of humor, and a real appreciation for staying calm. Throughout all of my experiences, I’ve found that what matters most to me is becoming a leader that people feel comfortable turning to. Someone they can trust to listen, hold space, and help them do fabulous work.

When not in the office, you’ll usually find me outdoors. Taking a walk is my favorite activity, though I’ll have to see how I do in these Kansas City winters! I also paint, tinker with the occasional tech project, and am always looking to learn something new. I’m filled with joy to be joining UMKC Libraries and to be part of a community that values creativity, curiosity, and collaboration.”
