SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Robert M. Snyder, Jr. British Collection is a sub-collection of the Robert M. Snyder, Jr. Collection, the foundation collection of the Department of Special Collections. The British Collection provides focused resources related to Great Britain, compiled from material that Snyder collected in this area.

SERIES NOTES

SERIES I: PUBLISHED MATERIAL

This series is contained in Box 1, folder 1, and consists of published material from Great Britain. Material ranges from bound material to articles and advertisements that date from 1808 to 1854, including Poor Letter H; The Cabinet of Wonders; Stage Funnyisms; The History of Pendennis; and Particulars of the Life, Trial, Character and Behavior of Margaret Dickson.

SERIES II: MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL

This series is contained in Box 1, folders 2-5, and consists of unpublished material from Great Britain. Included are a handwritten last will and testament on parchment paper; accounts by two men from the ship, Pegasus; religious commentary; papers from the Countess of Balbi; William Hamilton papers; Admiral William Sydney Smith papers; an original and unpublished manuscript by John Timbs; Equality by James Bryce; the Watch and Ward Bill for England, 1728; Pierrepont-Duke of Kingston; and miscellaneous manuscript material. Some items are from the 18th century, but most material is undated.

SERIES III: ROYAL FAMILY

This series is contained in Box 2, folders 1-3 (and oversized drawer 29), and consists of souvenirs, schedules, and memoriam from the Royal Family. Included are ceremonial procession schedules; a memoriam to Queen Victoria; several invitations to events hosted by and/or honoring members of the Royal Family dating from 1846-1866; and souvenirs from the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Also included in this series are a Royal Coach miniature model, a Portland Ware metal plate of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and a Portland Ware metal plate of His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh. These objects are housed in oversized drawer 29.

SERIES IV: BRITISH PARLIAMENT

This series is contained in Box 2, folder 4, and consists of two documents from the British Parliament dated 1705 and 1731.

SERIES V: LEGAL DOCUMENTS

This series is contained in Box 2, folders 5-6, and consists of several documents pertaining to legal matters. Included are vital records for London, 1672; Crim. Cron. & Murder, Teuton v. Gaul; legal documents from Middlesex, England; legal correspondence, Canterbury, England; court proceedings, England; and a manuscript account of the Trial of the Seven Bishops.

SERIES VI: RETAIL

This series is contained in Box 3, folder 1, and consists of several pocket-size ads for different retail shops and hotels, some receipts, and statements. Included are Jewelers/silversmith; grocers/general merchants; undertaker/cabinetmaker; hotels; textiles and apparel; hardware merchants; receipts; and a tuition statement.

SERIES VII: LOTTERY

This series is contained in Box 3, folder 2, and consists of several small advertisements and puffs for different lotteries in Great Britain. The advertisements and puffs are letterpress with mostly humorous woodcuts for illustration. Items that are dated are from the 18th and 19th centuries.

SERIES VIII: MISCELLANEOUS

This series is contained in Box 3, folders 3-6, and consists of a couple miscellaneous items from Great Britain, including locks of hair from royal and noble people of the day that were to be auctioned off to raise money for the Red Cross; a certificate from the Franco-British Exhibition of 1908 stating that Robert M. Snyder, Jr. attended on September 18th; and an unknown certificate with the handwritten words “Poet’s Corner,” dated 1721 on the seal.

SERIES IX: EPHEMERA BOOK

This series is contained in Book 1, which consists of items from Great Britain, including receipts, response notes, advertising cards, calling cards, funeral/memorial from Royal Family/Titled, and other miscellaneous ephemera. This series is organized by subject.

SERIES X: OVERSIZED

This series is contained in 2 folders in oversized drawer 29, and consists of oversized material from the collection. Included are documents related to King George III as well as Queen Anne’s household budget.
