Phonoduplication Policy and Services
PHONODUPLICATION POLICY AND PRICE LIST FOR SERVICES
The Marr Sound Archives at the
UMKC Miller Nichols Library provides a range of phonoduplication services. Preservation concerns, however, dictate that some methods of duplication are inappropriate for some types of material. The final decision as to whether or not an item is in a condition to be copied is made by Marr staff.
The complete recording of a song, piece or album will be copied only with the authorization of the Sound Recording Specialist. Very large orders are copied by special arrangement. All copying is done by Marr staff or person designated by the Marr Sound Archives.
HOW TO ORDER COPIES
- Arbitrary copying of collection material is NOT allowed. Marr staff reserves the right to refuse any request.
- Copies can be made onto CD, DVD, LTO Tape, Cassette, or Real Audio File.
- Order forms are available in the Marr Sound Archives. Copies are processed by Marr staff. Orders are filled subject to staff and equipment availability. The size of each order and the duplication format selected are factors to be considered in turn around time.
- The minimum turn around time for small duplication projects (anything under one hour of studio time) is 48 hours, although Marr staff will make every reasonable effort to meet shorter turn around times.
- University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) departments can be billed directly for phonoduplicating. Phonoduplication for other patrons must be paid for by cash, check or charge. Checks should be made out to Marr Sound Archives and sent to Marr Sound Archives, Miller Nichols Library, 800 E. 51st Street, Kansas City, MO 64110-2499.
- Recordings that are still in print or otherwise available through commercial outlets, record stores or online music stores will not be duplicated. Marr staff can assist in verifying if an item is available.
- Personal, non-commercial, unpublished recordings can be copied and are subject to the same duplication rates.
DUPLICATION RATES
Rates are subject to change without notice.
Prices are stated according to studio hours including the time needed to prepare and duplicate the item. Time is charged in quarter hour increments. The Marr Sound Archives staff reserves the right to submit bids for phonoduplication projects and may negotiate total project prices accordingly.
- UMKC students, faculty and staff are charged a rate of $20.00 per hour of studio time.
- Non-profit organization, non-UMKC researchers, (researchers affiliated with other higher education institutions, public radio, public television) and corporate users (record labels, commercial producers) are charged a rate of $70.00 per hour of studio time.
- Interlibrary Loan Requests are charged a flat rate of $20.00 per disc. The preferred delivery method of ILL request is the posting of a .ram file on the university server.
RESEARCHER OBLIGATION
Permission to publish, exhibit, broadcast, perform or quote from material in the Marr Sound Archives requires written permission. The receipt of copied materials does not automatically grant permission to publish. The rules governing publication of materials are fully stated in the Marr Sound Archives' Researcher Agreement form. It is the researcher's responsibility to obtain this form. The researcher agrees to take full responsibility for any actions, causes of action, costs, expenses, damages, claims, and demands whatsoever which may arise by reason of any use by the researcher or others permitted by the researcher of said material.
NOTICE / WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code)
governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are
authorized to furnish a phonocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified
conditions is that the phonocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for
any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a
user makes a request for, or later uses, a phonocopy or reproduction for purposes
in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if,
in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright
law.
