Special Collections houses books, periodicals, photographs, music scores, correspondence, personal papers, broadsides, and other historical documents and ephemera that are excellent primary and secondary source material. The focus of the collection relates to the 19th century Trans-Mississippi West experience as well as more recent cultural, political and music history (particularly Jazz Age Kansas City). Highlights include the Snyder Collection of Americana; the "Z" Collection of rare and limited edition books (featuring the Kelmscott Press books of William Morris); collections of local political leaders Richard W. Bolling, L. P. Cookingham and Leon M. Jordan; Truman Library's Student Research File; and the Suzanne Statland Collection on Holocaust Studies.
Special Collections is strong in music material, especially reflected in the wealth of music scores and photographs in its holdings. The Marr Sound Archives, the audio unit of Special Collections, houses over 300,000 sound recordings. Notable collections include the Paul Creston, Amy Cheney Beach, Raymond Scott and Warren Durrett Collections, all rich with manuscript scores from classical to popular forms. Collections of Dave E. Dexter Jr., Wilbur "Buck" Clayton, "Cactus" Charlie Menees, Mutual Musicians Foundation and others document developments in American jazz, particularly the unique style pioneered in Kansas City. Other material, such as the Arthur B. Church KMBC Radio Collection and the Grand Emporium Collection, chronicle related aspects of local history, from broadcasting to nightclub life. In addition, tens of thousands of titles from the golden age of sheet music publication reside in the Popular American Sheet Music Collection, offering a broad range of cultural, musical and artistic study.
