Special Collections
Walter Brenner Collection

Walter Brenner was born on January 21, 1906 in Wynberg, Union of South Africa. His family later moved to Germany, where Brenner studied violin and theory in Berlin. His early musical works were published by his own publishing company, until it was seized by the Nazis. In 1935, Brenner emigrated to the United States and became a bank worker in San Francisco. During this time, he studied with Dominco Brescia at Mills College. Brenner moved to Los Angeles in 1940, where he worked as a music copyist at the Warner Bros. and Disney studios. He died in Los Angeles on December 19, 1969.

Significant items in this Collection are the following orchestral works in full score manuscript: The Gentle Shepherd: A Symphonic Poem (1940); Piano Concerto, Opus 25 (1951); Valse Symphonique (1960); and Prophecy [19]64. Other noteworthy manuscripts in the Collection include God is Love [194-] for SATB and orchestra full score; Quartet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon [19]63 in full score; and Mass in a Hebrew Mode, [19]67 for SATB and organ full score. The Collection also includes manuscript and printed copies of chamber music, choral works, and songs as well as pieces for solo piano, organ, and accordion.


Special Collections is a non-circulating and non-browsing resource center. The Special Collections Reading Room is open to researchers Monday through Friday during the academic year. Public service hours for the current semester are listed at http://library.umkc.edu/spec-col/index.html#hours but researchers are encouraged to call ahead for verification of hours due to University intersessions and other events. Special Collections is located on the fourth floor of the Miller Nichols Library at 5100 Rockhill Road in Kansas City, Missouri.
