In a search engine you enter words or phrases that describe your subject. The engine then returns a list of Web addresses that match your criteria to some degree. A wide variety of search engines is available, and each one works in a slightly different fashion. This information is intended as an introduction to some of the most useful and reliable search engines. For a more detailed look at how these tools work, please see Search Engine Watch (searchenginewatch.com/) or Tool Kit for the Expert Web Searcher (from the ALA Website).
Unlike search engines, metasearch engines (or metacrawlers) do not crawl the Web themselves to build lists of Websites. Instead, they transmit your search simultaneously to several individual search engines and their databases of Web pages. The results are then blended together onto one page. For a more detailed look at how these tools work, please see Search Engine Watch (searchenginewatch.com/) or The Web Searcher's Toolkit (www.lita.org/committe/toptech/toolkit.htm). Below are some of the major metacrawlers.
Some types of Websites and links are excluded from most search engines by policy. Others are excluded because search engine spiders cannot gain access to them. Information that search engines cannot index is referred to as the "Invisible Web." The Invisible Web is estimated to be two to three or more times bigger than the visible Web. To find out more about the Invisible Web and how to access its hidden material, please see the UC Berkeley Library's informational Website (www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/InvisibleWeb.html) on the topic.
