Begun in 1994, EDGAR is the database of online financial filings for all companies registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, including mutual funds. The most common forms are the 10K (annual report), 10Q (quarterly report), 8K (material events including Chapter 11 notice), 14A (proxy statements), 13D (beneficial ownership), and 20F (foreign private issuers).

Online filing was phased in over a three-year period ending in May 1996, so coverage before that date is incomplete. Some documents cannot yet be filed electronically; and for others electronic filing is optional. Those documents may be ordered directly from the SEC. Please note that the popular Annual Report to Shareholders is available electronically in Lexis Nexis Academic database in the “Business” category. See a librarian for assistance. Also, many annual reports are available from the company’s website.
