MERLIN Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What libraries are represented in the MERLIN Library Catalog?

The MERLIN Library Catalog contains information about materials owned by the four members of the Missouri Education and Research Libraries Information Network: the University of Missouri-Columbia, The University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Missouri-Rolla, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The catalog includes information on most materials added to the libraries' collections since 1970. Much older material is also included; please check with the individual library for more specific information.

Why do I see call numbers for items at other MERLIN libraries?

When you are in the UMKC catalog, UMKC holdings display first, then you see holdings at other locations that also own the item. If you want to redo your search to find what is owned in another or all of the MERLIN catalogs, you can change your MERLIN catalog to view the entire collection or another library, and then use the HISTORY of searches done under "Other options" to redo your search in the entire holdings of the MERLIN Library Catalog.

I have found instances when items are checked out and a due date is displayed. What does it mean when the status is blank?

A blank status currently means that item is not checked out. If you cannot find this item on the shelf, please ask library staff for assistance.

What does the location "UMK MNL" or "UMK HSL" mean?

"UMK" identifies items held at UMKC Libraries. "MNL" identifies items located at Miller Nichols Library; "HSL" identifies items held at the Health Sciences Library. "UMK Dental" identifies items at the UMKC Dental Library and "UMK Law" identifies items at the UMKC Law Library. Should you have questions about location abbreviations, please ask library staff for assistance.

Why are the journal holdings out of order?

Although the software for this system is very sophisticated, and can automatically pull together volumes by location, reordering the individual volumes is not yet automatic. Once a day the Library staff run a special program that puts the holdings in order within each MERLIN location so holdings are only out of synch about 24 hours maximum. If you have a specific volume number, choose V (Find Specific Volume/Copy) to speed up your search for a particular volume.

I tried using the Reserves feature. How can I easily search for a UMKC course?

You can easily find UMKC courses several different ways. You can search for the professor or teaching assistant's name, and the course reserves will be listed. You also may search by course number or name. If you search by course number, preface it with "UMKC," as in "UMKC CONS 593" or "UMKC ED 523." This will retrieve the reserve items for the UMKC course with that number.

I used to be able to search the Table of Contents and Notes, but that option is no longer available. What happened?

The Table of Contents and Notes search has been incorporated into a new, more powerful KeyWord search function. Searching of the author fields was also added. The KeyWord search now searches author, title, subject, table of contents and notes fields.

I see there is an Author/Title search. How can I do an Author/Author search?

The MERLIN Library Catalog has a powerful feature called "limiting." You may use this feature to limit your search to a word in the author, title, subject or medical subject indexes or limit your search to type of material (book, sound recording, score, video/proj medium) or a publisher, year, or location. If you want to search for two authors, first do an author search for one, then limit your search to a word in the author, using the second author's name.

Why is the MERLIN Library Catalog slow at times?

Sometimes the catalog may be a little slow because of a complex search or a search looking for a common word, like "history." Other times, the catalog may be slow because of network connections. If you think the system is not responding quickly enough, please report it to Miller Nichols Library Reference (816-235-1534) during library hours, or send email to MNL Reference. Please specify when you were trying to connect, where you were connecting from (the library, home, office), and the search you were doing. If using email, please specify this information in the message.

What should I do if I cannot connect to the MERLIN Library Catalog?

If you cannot connect to the MERLIN Library Catalog, try a couple more times. If you receive the message "All ports in use" or something similar, please contact the Miller Nichols Library Reference Desk at 816-235-1534 during library hours or send email to MNL Reference. Please specify when you were trying to connect and where you were connecting from (the library, home, office). The better informed we are about when the catalog is slow or when users cannot connect to the catalog, the better prepared we are to resolve these issues.

The MERLIN Library Catalog is still under minor construction and has many options for display and searching. Should you have questions about how to use the MERLIN Library Catalog, please ask for assistance or call the Miller Nichols Library Reference Desk at (816) 235-1534, the Health Sciences Reference Desk at (816) 235-1880, the Dental Library at (816) 235-2030, or the Leon E. Block Law Library at (816) 235-1650.
