Patricia Barra Receives ALA Spectrum Scholarship

UMKC Libraries Learning and Research Graduate Assistant Patricia Barra received a highly competitive 2016-2017 Spectrum Scholarship, awarded to exceptional students pursuing graduate degrees in library and information studies.

The scholorship is awarded to students from traditionally underrepresented ethnic groups looking to gain leadership training, professional networking, and mentoring opportunities as they move forward in their Library Science degree.

The Spectrum Scholarship Program is ALA's national diversity and recruitment effort designed to address the specific issue of under-representation of critically needed ethnic librarians within the profession while serving as a model for ways to bring attention to larger diversity issues in the future.

Beyond financial backing, this scholarship provides recipients with other benefis such as a complementary one-year student membership to ALA, Opportunities to apply for travel grants to regional institutes and conferences, and free attendance to the Spectrum Leadership Institute -  a 3 day institute that highlights cross cultural models of leadership and features national library and community leaders - among many others.

Patricia was selected based on her commitment to diversity, commitment to entering the library profession, demonstrated community outreach, academic ability, and achievements and leadership potential.

Congratulations, Patricia!
