News from the Dean: Look what the library can do for you!

Well, it is September and the Fall semester is already 2 weeks old! As you dig into your studies, you may want to be aware of the many things the library has to help you with your assignments.

I’m sure you know the library has many books and journals for you to use to do your papers or just to explore some new area of interest.

Look at what else the library has to offer:

1- Electronic resources are available 24X7 from anywhere!  We have over 260,000 e-books and over 72,000 e-journals, all available via over 300 online databases!  You can access all of these materials from anywhere with your UMKC single signon.

2- Need help with your research? Our librarians are available to assist you at the Service Desk. If you need an in-depth consultation, they can schedule you for an app ointment with a subject specialist.

3- UMKC doesn’t have what you search? Our librarians are available to assist you at the Sneed for your paper? Request the article or book through our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. Most things are available in a few days.  Journal articles will be sent to you via email.

4- Need to practice a presentation? We have a Presentation Practice Room in the Miller Nichols Library with all the technology you will find in UMKC classrooms.  Just contact in person or by calling the Service Desk (816-235-1526). You can schedule it for a small group or just yourself for up to 2 hours.

5- Faculty may assign readings from Reserve materials. Print books on reserve will be available at the service desk of any of the UMKC Libraries.  Electronic materials can be found in the Blackboard course.

6- Printing, including color, is available in all of the UMKC Libraries. You can use your print quota and add value to your one-card for larger printing quantities.  Easy to use scanners are also available in all of the libraries; you can email the scan to yourself or save it to a flash drive.  We encourage you to Go Green and save your print quota for only necessary printing! Check out this helpful guide for more information about printing and scanning.

7- Need to re-charge your electronic devices or to store your stuff for a couple of hours?  We have provided lockers with electric outlets in Miller Nichols Library.   Just go to the Service Desk on the 1st floor to check-out a key.

8- Study spaces are available in all of our libraries. Miller Nichols has Quiet Study spaces on the 4th floor. Also be sure check our our great group study rooms, booths, and other comfortable spaces on the newly renovated 1st floor. Check out our noise level guidelines to identify the study space that is right for you.

9- Computers are available in all of the libraries. In Miller Nichols you will find them on the Ground, 1st and 2nd floors. You can even check our mobile site to see where computer stations are open and not currently in use. Wireless access and printing is available everywhere.

10- Exhibits and Programs. Throughout the year you may will find exhibits in the Dean’s Gallery, Ground Floor, and 4th Floor and programs in the iX Theater that will provide food for thought. Take a break from your studies and check out these opportunities. Follow our news blog or on Facebook or Twitter for the latest information.

11- Robot Café. We love having food and beverages in the library!  In addition to being able to purchase a light snack or a cup of coffee, you may also heat up food in the microwave in the café area.
