Guidelines for Placing Print Materials on E-Reserve
Miller Nichols Library offers Electronic Reserves to faculty and students. Faculty may request items to be placed on Reserve by using the following electronic form or by filling out a form available at the Access Services Desk Miller Nichols Library. https://library.umkc.edu/forms/mnlreserve-printform.htm
Please follow these guidelines when submitting items for Electronic Reserve:
- No staples (please paperclip individual articles).
- One sided
- Clear photocopies with minimal black edges. (This will save on toner and download time for the students when they access and print the items at home.)
Please review and follow the University policy regarding copyright and fair use when submitting items for Reserve.

To enable us to comply with Copyright Guidelines, please provide full citations for all materials submitted. If the materials do not comply with Copyright, the Miller Nichols Library will attempt to secure copyright permission for Electronic Reserve from the Copyright Clearance Center with a limit of $100 per course. If the cost exceeds $100, you will be given the option of having your department pay the amount that exceeds the $100 or not having the item on reserve for the semester. Books owned by the Miller Nichols Library and Personal copies of books may be placed on reserve. In addition, single copies of the following materials may be placed on reserve:
- one chapter from a book
- one article from a periodical or newspaper (3 per periodical year)
- one short story or short essay (less than 2,500 words)
- one short poem (less than 250 words)
- one chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon or picture per book, periodical, or newspaper issue
We will do our best to make sure your materials are ready for your students to use, but because of the large volume of materials at semesters’ beginnings, we need your help to process these materials quickly. Please allow at least 2-5 working days for processing of materials and understand that materials are processed in the order they are received.
Before you make Reserve assignments, please verify materials are available.
- Accessing Electronic Reserves from off campus requires a person to login with their UMKC e-mail username and password.
- This limits the use of the materials to current UMKC students and faculty.
