  28. Charles Carroll Papers (3 reels)

    Note This edition is based largely on the Charles Carroll material at the Maryland Historical Society, but includes all known items located elsewhere (items from 23 other repositories have been incorporated). Charles Carroll (1737-1832) was a delegate to the Continental Congress, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A federalist, Carroll also served in the Maryland Senate and represented Maryland as a Senator in the first federal Congress.

    Note Consists of manuscripts belonging to the Harper, Carroll, and Pennington families in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society. The collection begins in 1747 with a file of letters to Richard Croxall of the Baltimore Iron Works and concludes in the 20th century with papers of various members of the Pennington family. The bulk of the collection, from 1784 to 1825, centers around Robert Goodloe Harper, his wife Catherine Carroll, and members of their immediate families. Harper (1765-1825), a cabinet maker's son, was a politician and Federalist leader, an attorney, and a leading spirit in the colonization of American Negroes in Africa.
