Government Publications/Microforms: United States and Missouri government publications are located on the first floor of the Library across from the Information Commons. Ask for assistance at the Reference Desk in the Information Commons.

The United States government established the Government Printing Office (GPO) (www.gpo.gov/) Depository Program in 1895. The Library of the University of Kansas City was designated a depository library in 1938. The Miller Nichols Library of the University of Missouri-Kansas City now serves as a federal depository for the 5th U. S. Congressional District in Missouri and selects 65 percent of all the items currently offered by the GPO. The Federal depository collection provides original source materials for research and study of the activities, programs, and policies of the federal government. The collection is comprehensive, encompassing current and historical materials in a wide range of subject areas. Collection strengths include statistical sources, a complete collection of the Bureau of the Census (www.census.gov/) publications, extensive business, labor and education statistics and periodicals, reports from a variety of departments, agencies, and commissions, and comprehensive legislative materials. The Miller Nichols Library selectively houses 16 percent of its collection in the subject areas of science and technology at the Linda Hall Library (www.lindahall.org/) - it is an independent and privately supported research library for science and technology. The Federal depository collection is a reference collection located in the Government Publications/Microforms area on the first floor of the Miller Nichols Library. Although materials must be used in the building, all are welcome to use the collection. Materials are available in paper, microfiche, and electronic format. Some compact disk products such as Census data for Missouri and Kansas are available on the University Libraries Reference Web Menu and on the Government Publications workstations in Reference. The Library is also a selective depository for Missouri State (www.state.mo.us/) documents in paper format and microfiche format.
