Who is Miller Nichols?

Miller Nichols was an active and outspoken advocate for Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Kansas City and its libraries. The General Library at UMKC was named for Miller Nichols in 1989.

The son of J.C. Nichols, founder of the J.C. Nichols Company and the Country Club Plaza, Miller Nichols was born in Kansas City in 1911 and attended what is now Pembroke High School. Later, he graduated from the University of Kansas where he was president of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

Mr. Nichols assumed leadership of the family real estate development business, the J.C. Nichols Company, upon the death of his father in 1950. He promoted, developed, redeveloped and beautified the County Club Plaza and added many great works of art to the landscape of the Plaza. He was named "Mr. Kansas City" in 1969 by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. He passed away in 2002.
