The East wing of the first floor of the Miller Nichols Library houses the majority of the Government Publications collection. UMKC is a federal depository for the fifth U.S. Congressional District in Missouri and selects 65 percent of all the items currently published by the Government Printing Office. UMKC also is a depository for state of Missouri publications, collecting approximately 75 percent of all items published by the state.

The collection provides original source materials for research and study of the activities, programs, and policies of the federal and state governments. A portion of the collection focusing on science and technology materials is housed at the Linda Hall Library. Linda Hall is a selective housing site for the UMKC federal depository collection.

Collection strengths include statistical sources, a complete collection of the Bureau of the Census publications, extensive business, labor and education statistics and periodicals, and comprehensive legislative materials.
