Study Room Reservation Guidelines
Three Group Study Rooms (
GSRs) are available on the
first floor of the Miller Nichols Library in the Information Commons.
They are available for the use of
UMKC students who
need to discuss course and project work while not disturbing other library users.
The following regulations provide fair access to the
GSRs and ensure accountability
for responsible use.
What size groups will the rooms accommodate and what hours are they available?
- GSRs are available for use from the opening to the closing of the library each day.
- GSRs 1 and 2 (on the east side of the Information Commons) accommodate 2-4 students
and GSR 3
(in the southwest corner of the Information Commons) seats up to 5 students.
- All rooms have tables wired for electricity and data so students can use
laptop, and wireless, computers.
Who can use a GSR?
- Individuals or groups of two or more people.
- Currently enrolled UMKC students may reserve a group study room.
- Groups with reservations have priority.
- Individual students may not reserve group study rooms, but may use them
when not reserved
by a group. The individual will be asked to vacate the room for groups with or
without reservations.
Additionally, individual students will find several areas in the Information
Commons where computers
and resources can be used independently.
- Groups without reservations may use GSRs, but will be asked to
vacate the rooms for groups with reservations.
- GSRs were developed for student study in the library and are not available
for regularly scheduled academic classes,
university seminars, meetings or other activities. Please contact the
Scheduling and Room Assignments Office at (816) 235-1119 to schedule
a classroom, or the Student Life Office at (816) 235-1416
to schedule a meeting room for clubs or organizations.
How can you get a Group Study Room?
- Time is guaranteed by reservation, on a first-come, first-served basis.
- One person from the group may reserve a group study room
through Access Services in person or by calling (816) 235-1526.
- The student who reserves the room must be currently enrolled
at UMKC and present a photo ID.
- Reservations may be made up to one week in advance.
For how long can a Group Study Room be reserved?
- A group may initially reserve the room for two hours.
If, at the end of the group's time, no other group has scheduled the room, that group may
renew it for additional time in one-hour increments.
- At least two members of the group must be present before access to the room is permitted.
Bookings expire after a 10 minute grace period.
What is the proper use of Group Study Rooms?
- Rules regulating the Miller Nichols Library also
apply in the Group Study Rooms. (Please see Guidelines for
Patrons with Children.)
- The student reserving the room will be
responsible for any damage to the study room during
his/her scheduled time. If you find the room damaged
or littered with trash, please report the problem to
the Access Services staff immediately to avoid liability.
