Reference Sources | Government Publications | Web Resources

Note: Social work has been defined as "the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to this goal" (Barker, 1991, p. 221). Social work activities can take place in independent institutions such as settlement houses and community centers, as well as within larger social institutions such as hospitals and public schools. The resources listed in this guide will help you identify items of interest for the study of the theory and practice of social work.
