Understanding a Library of Congress Call Number

Characteristics of a Library of Congress Call Number

The Library of Congress (LC) Classification System combines letters of the alphabet and Arabic numerals. The letters I, O, W, X, and Y are not being used right now because they are reserved for further expansion of the classification system. Each LC class represents a different subject area, but there are basic features of all classes.
  1. Main classes of the LC classification system are marked with a single letter:

    H Social Sciences
    K Law
    R Medicine

  2. Principle subdivisions are denoted by an added letter:

    H Social Sciences HM Sociology
K Law KF Law of the United States
    R Medicine RJ Pediatrics

  3. Classes are further subdivided by the use of Arabic numerals beginning at 1 in each subdivision and going as high as 9999 in some classes. General materials, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and directories appear early in the class:

    ML Literature of Music
    ML 1 Periodicals
    ML 12 Directories
    ML 29 Foundations
    ML 32 Institutions
    ML 100 Dictionaries, Encyclopedias
    ML 111 Bibliographies

  4. Within each class, the classification numbers proceed from the general to the more specific. Decimal letters and numbers also may be used to subdivide a subject alphabetically by subject or form or by state or country:

    M Music
    M 1627 National Music
    M 1628 National Music - United States
    M 1629 .3 Music for national holidays
    M 1629 .3 .F5 Fourth of July
    M 1629 .3 .T4 Thanksgiving Day

LC classification numbers range in length from one letter and one numeral to two letters, four numerals, one decimal number, and a decimal letter and number combination. Within each class, classification proceeds from general to specific, and the longest numbers belong to the most specialized subjects.

Reading a Library of Congress Call Number

Books are arranged on the shelf according to the classification and, within each class, alphabetically by author.

All numbers before the decimal are read in ordinary sequence and all numbers following the decimal are read decimally. For example, this is the order in which the following call numbers would appear on the shelf:
PN6099.35 PN6099.4 PN6110.1

The last letter and numeral combination is the author number which also is read decimally. For example, this is the order in which the following call numbers would appear on the shelf:
PN6110
.C7
D25
PN6110
.C7
D29.72
PN6110

D29.8

More examples:
