Library Guide to the 1960s:
We Can Change the World

The early 1960s in America were a time of hope, energy, and prosperity, a time when the United States settled confidently into its role as a superpower possessed of military might and financial clout. "It is a time for a new generation of leadership to cope with new problems and new opportunities," the new president John F. Kennedy told the nation in 1960, "For there is a new world to be won."

The decade of the 1960s was marked by activism supporting civil rights, equal rights for women, the war on poverty, and other initiatives. Increasing tensions of the cold war and the war in Vietnam polarized the generations. After the political assassinations in the U.S. and political uprisings around the world, optimism and the idealism of the early 1960s was diminished and replaced by protests, grief, and cynicism. (Adapted from The 1960s: Era Overview, 1960-1969, DISCovering U.S. History)
