The UMKC University Libraries subscribe to many full-text resources online
in order to make the research process smooth and seamless for you, whether
you are working in the libraries or from a computer off-campus.
Find articles on a topic
To find articles online, you can begin with indexes, such as those found
on the libraries' list of databases. Depending on your research topic, you
may
choose
to look at the entire list of databases (alphabetical) or visit Databases:
Subject Listing. Either option will lead you to collections of information
you
can search to find what you need. Select databases with an F next to them
for better luck in finding full-text online.
- Step One
Select a database to search (view the database description to determine
if the database contains the type of information you're looking for).
- Step Two
Access the selected database - if you are off-campus, you will be asked
to log in with your Single Sign-on (UMKC username and password) or your
last name and UMKC ID number.
- Step Three
Select one or more key terms to represent your search and enter them
into the database.
- Step Four
Access the full-text of the articles retrieved, if available.
As some journals, magazines, and newspapers are available in more than one
database, if the article you want is not available in full-text in one database,
see the directions below for tracking down full-text online to find out if
your journal is available full-text elsewhere.
- Search Serials Solutions: Many of the libraries' databases are indexed by
Serials Solutions. Use this to find out if the full-text of the journal
you need is available in another online database.
- Search the MERLIN
library catalog: Sometimes the full-text of a journal is linked to from MERLIN.
Follow these steps to find out if this is true for the publication you need:
- Begin at the UMKC University Libraries' homepage (library.umkc.edu)
- Select MERLIN Library Catalog
- Select the University of Missouri - Kansas City Libraries
- Perform a journal, magazine, and newspaper title search for the publication
that the article you need is in
- If the library subscribes to that publication, you will see a "link
to Web version" if the full-text is available through MERLIN
- NOTE: UMKC users have access to Web versions labeled UMK
- NOTE: Access to Web versions from the MERLIN Library Catalog is not always permitted for off-campus users
- Search CUFTS: CUFTS is like a free version of Serials Solutions. It does
include some publications that are not included in Serials Solutions. Search
for the
title of the publication containing the article you need.
- Search Subject guides: Library Subject Guides provide suggested links you
can use to access free journals online. Keep in mind that access to free publications
online can be limited.
If the full-text is not available online
If the UMKC University Libraries do not offer the full-text of the article
you need online, you can search the MERLIN
library catalog to discover if the library provides access to the journal,
magazine, or newspaper in print format.
If UMKC does not provide access to the article you need
If what you need is not available in any format, online
or in print, you can submit an
Interlibrary Loan request for that item and
the libraries will attempt to order it for you from another library. Interlibrary Loan is a service provided to UMKC students, faculty, and staff.
