What are Interlibrary Loan (ILL) & Document Delivery?

Interlibrary Loan

  • A service to obtain research materials from other libraries they are not owned or available at UMKC Libraries.
  • Make requests for materials in ILL@UMKC Articles/chapters scans delivered electronically.
  • Physical items held for you or delivered to the UMKC library you choose: Miller Nichols, Health Sciences, or Dental.
  • "Library use only" materials must remain at the UMKC library you choose: Miller Nichols, Health Sciences, or Dental .
  • RooBooks Delivery available (for those who qualify).

Document Delivery

  • A service to obtain research materials owned and available at UMKC Libraries.
  • Make requests for materials in ILL@UMKC
  • Articles/chapters scans delivered electronically
  • Physical items held for you or delivered to the UMKC library you choose: Miller Nichols, Health Sciences, or Dental
  • "Library use only" materials must remain at the UMKC library that owns them: Miller Nichols, Health Sciences, or Dental
  • RooBooks Delivery available (for those who qualify)

How do I make a request?

Log into ILL@UMKC
While you are searching in databases, click Find it at UMKC. It will lead you to ILL@UMKC and input your request information for you.
Or you can start from scratch and fill out a request form for the material type you are requesting (article, book chapter, audio/visual).

How will I be notified?

All messages will be sent to your UMKC email address.
We cannot use an alternate address if you have a UMKC email address.
Be sure to check your account regularly and respond to messages promptly.

Renewals

Interlibrary Loan (other libraries' items) Document Delivery (UMKC Libraries' items)
Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Request renewals at least three (3) days before your due date. Renewals are based on item type and at the discretion of the owning library.
Request renewals through ILL@UMKC. Under "Checked Out Items," find the item you would like to renew. Click "Renew." Renewals on UMKC, MERLIN, or MOBIUS items can be made through your Library Account
Some items cannot be renewed. Some items cannot be renewed.

Recalls, Returns, and Fines

Recalls Returns Fines
A recall is a shortening of your loan period. If your item is recalled, your item is due back sooner than the original due date and cannot be renewed. Return your items to any UMKC Library: Miller Nichols, Health Sciences, or Dental. As a courtesy, we will send you a reminder email five (5) days before the due date. Daily late fines are not issued.
Recalls on ILL material can be issued by the lending library at any time. They will recall a book when it is needed by one of their users or for course reserves. Items not returned on time may jeopardize your library privileges. Furthermore, UMKC Libraries can face penalties when items are not returned to lending libraries on time. If your item is not returned by ten (10) days after the due date, you will be billed for replacing the item.
You must return a recalled book by the shortened due date. Contact the ILL department for assistance if you still need the item. Your library and Pathway accounts may also be blocked if your material is overdue. This will block you from checking out/renewing library items, registering for classes, and requesting transcripts. If you return an item after you have been billed, you may still be responsible for the replacement fees if UMKC has already paid them to the lending library.

RooBooks Delivery

What is RooBooks Delivery? Who can use this service? How do I request RooBooks Delivery?
UMKC campus mail delivery for ILL or UMKC items to your campus office address. UMKC faculty, staff, and registered Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) who have current campus office addresses. Interested GTAs should register with their departments. In your ILL or Document Delivery request, choose "RooBooks" from the "Pick-up location/delivery method" option.
When you request item to be sent via RooBooks, you are responsible for the item from the moment it is checked out to you until the time it is returned. If you experience problems, please contact the campus mail drop location in your office building. This service is not available for students (except registered GTAs) or for those without a UMKC campus office address. Items must be returned to a service desk at a UMKC Library: Miller Nichols, Health Sciences, or Dental.
