Services

Borrowing materials

To check out items please have an institutional photo identification card. You are financially responsible for all items checked out to your library account and for the return of those materials.UMKC faculty, staff and students and Hospital Hill staff may check out materials from the Health Sciences Library. Businesses or individuals without UMKC affiliation may purchase a membership to the Community Information Program in order to obtain checkout privileges.

Renewals

Renew online, by telephone or in person. Books may be renewed twice. Journals may be renewed once. Holds may be placed on items checked out to others. Patrons will be notified when items are available. Items on hold may not be renewed.


Returns

Please return books to the Circulation Desk during library hours. After hours use the book drop located outside the library entrance.


Overdues

When an item becomes overdue, we send reminders requesting return. The third notice is a bill and borrowing privileges are suspended until the item is returned.

Interlibrary Loan

The library will attempt to obtain from other libraries any materials not available in the Health Sciences Library. This service is provided for our primary clientele (UMKC students and faculty and persons affiliated with the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Biological Sciences) Charges and response time will vary depending on the item requested. If you would like to request your Interlibrary Loans on-line, please use our electronic Interlibrary Loan form. For assistance in ordering books or articles, see the guide "Ordering Books and Articles from Other Libraries."

Document Delivery Suppliers. These are commercial organizations that will get you the article you need usually in 24 hours for a fee. You will need a credit card to pay for the service and some way to receive the article, usually a fax machine number. A Web page that lists many document delivery suppliers is located at http://www.library.vcu.edu/tml/docsupp/. These suppliers are listed alphabetically; we recommend you check out the delivery guarantee before ordering.

Reference Services

HSL Reference

A reference librarian is normally available to offer reference assistance from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. If the Reference Desk is not staffed, inquire at the Circulation Desk or send the librarians an email. Librarians are always happy to assist you in finding information you need.

Photocopying

All patrons may use the Ikon Services copy machines located in the library.Copicards cost $1.00, and copies are $.09 each in addition to the cost of the card. The library keeps limited cash, and the photocopy machines do not take change. Please bring dollar bills if you would like to use the copy machines. Library staff will make photocopies of items for faculty members of UMKC. Please use a photocopy request form. Call Circulation at (816) 235-1880 for more information on this service. All photocopying in the Health Sciences Library is subject to the provision of the U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17).

 


Library Instruction Program

A variety of classes are offered on subjects such as searching MEDLINE and finding quality consumer health information. Individual instruction can be arranged by emailing or calling Sue Sykes Berry Instruction Librarian at (816) 235-1874, or stopping by the library.


Disability Services
