Dear Docents, PharmD's and Educational Assistants -

Attached, please find information on how to find who is citing your published work using ISI Web of Science. This handout was created by Amrita Burdick, one of the Clinical Medical Librarians at the Health Sciences Library.

Searching for Cited References - ISI Web of Science.

Faculty authors often are asked who is citing their work, that is, asked who lists articles published by the author in the bibliography of yet another article. This information may be requested in the context of annual evaluations or promotion and tenure review.

The University of Missouri system has purchased access to a searchable web-based product that includes this information. This is a brief introduction to that database, the ISI Web of Science.

Years Covered

ISI Web of Science --1995 to present-- is available through the University Libraries' website, and this is a way to check for recent citations. The Health Sciences Library has print volumes of Science Citation Index for 1964-1990. If you need the intervening years (1991-1994) Linda Hall Library also owns Science Citation Index and you can access 1968- present in their reference room.

How to Search

For articles indexed by Web of Science (and not just listed from a bibliography of an article that is indexed) include multiple authors. Otherwise, citations often are indexed only under the primary (first listed) author. To be on the safe side, search your cited references under each primary author. If you, or other authors have used varied forms of the name in publication (first initial only; two initials, maiden names) you will need to search all variations to have a complete search.

A Sample Search

    ISI Web of Science database
  1. Find ISI Web of Science among the list of UMKC Libraries databases. Go to the Health Sciences Libraries homepage and click on Databases. You can find ISI Web of Science under either the alphabetical listing or in the subject listing for Science & Technology."

  2. select Full Search Clicking on the ISI Web of Science link will lead you to the opening page of the database. From this screen, you need to click on full search to get to the cited references option.

  3. you may choose one or all three indexes

  4. You may choose any of three citation indexes. If you think that you might be cited in more than one of them, you can leave in as many as you want. Now click on cited ref search.

  5. enter the name Leland H. Hartwell

  6. This will bring up the following screen. In this example we are entering the name of Leland H. Hartwell, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize, so he is likely to have many, many cited references. Remember to include any name variations such as only one initial, in following searches.

The number of 'Hits' beside each article is the number of times each article has been cited.

  7. Here is the first part of this author's list. The number of "Hits" beside each article is the number of times each article has been cited. Since bibliographies vary, you may recognize more than one listing for a single article. Total the "Hits" to find the number of times an article has been cited.

IF you want further information, clicking on the first blue linked reference will bring up the bibliographic reference to the Cancer Research article and give you options to link to the articles that have cited it by clicking on the "Times Cited" link..

click on the first linked reference to
	   bring up the bibliographic reference

    Try the Internet Tutorial

This is a brief introduction to searching for cited references. The ISI Web of Sciences site also has a brief Internet self-tutorial and the database includes useful help screens that provide further examples and information.
