Ordering Books and Articles from Other Libraries
The Health Sciences Library offers its patrons several ways
of obtaining materials that we do NOT own. You can route your requests electronically
to the UMKC Health Sciences Interlibrary Loan department from any computer
that offers Internet access. You need never fill out a paper form again!
FOR BOOKS—Two Methods:
Find your book at another University of Missouri Library:
- Go to the UMKC Health Sciences Library website.
- Use the "Quick Links" drop
down menu and click on Search MERLIN Library Catalog: UMKC Only.
- The Health Sciences Library has the book if you see "UMK HSL"
listed by the book’s call number. If another Merlin (University of Missouri
and Saint Louis University) Library does own it, you can
request item from the catalog.
- While you are looking at the book record in the Merlin catalog, click
on "Request Item" at the top of the page.
- Follow the screen directions and enter your information.
- In the "Choose a Pickup Location" drop-down menu, select "*UMK
Health Sciences Circulation."
- Select the latest possible date that you can use this book. The library will notify you when the book is ready to be picked up at the Health Sciences
Library. Please allow 7-14 days.
Order your book on the Health Sciences Library Website:
- Go to the UMKC Health Sciences Library website.
- From the Health Sciences Library page, use the "Quick Links" drop
down menu and click on Request Item Not at UMKC HSL.
- Fill out form as completely and accurately as possible.
- Interlibrary Loan will send a notice when the book
arrives and is ready for pick-up. Please allow 7-14 days.
FOR JOURNAL ARTICLES—Three Methods:
Requesting Journal Articles Using Ovid Databases—Medline, CINAHL, etc.:
- Do a search in an Ovid database (like Medline) finding suitable articles.
- When you see an article that you want, click on "Library Holdings"
to see if the Health Sciences Library owns the journal. Also check "Search for full-text" to see if it is available online. Please
do not request articles if the Health Sciences Library owns the journal.
If we do not own the journal, you can
request the articles directly from the Ovid database (Medline, CINAHL) that
you are searching by following the steps below. If we do
own the journal, please come into the library and check out the journal
or make photocopies.
- Click on the box by the citation number, making a check mark in the box.
You may mark more than one a time. Please take care that you have only
placed check marks by the articles that you want to order—not articles from
journals owned by the Health Sciences Library.
- Scroll down to the "Results Manager" at the bottom of the page.
- Make sure that the box "Selected Citations" on the left-hand side
is checked.
- Click "Order" on the right hand side.
- Fill out the form completely. Please include a date in "Date
not needed after," selecting the latest possible date that
you can use the item.
- Allow 7-10 days for arrival. We will send the article to you via e-mail
or to your campus mailbox.
Requesting Journal Articles Using PubMed:
You can order articles while searching PubMed using a service called Loansome
Doc.
Requesting Journal Articles on the Health Sciences Library Website:
If you know which journal article you want and do not need to use Medline,
you may order journal articles using the Health Sciences Library online form.
- Go to the UMKC Health Sciences Library website.
- Use the "Quick Links" drop
down menu and click on Request Item Not at UMKC HSL.
- You will be prompted to check the MERLIN catalog. Please do so to be certain
that you are not requesting an article that we have here in the Health Sciences
Library.
- Log in to the ILL@UMKC system to submit requests.
- Fill out form as completely and accurately as possible. The PMID or UI
number in the article citation (found in Medline) speeds processing and
should be included if possible.
- When the article arrives, it will be sent via e-mail or to your campus
mailbox. Please allow 7-14 days.
