How to Use the MERLIN Catalog
MERLIN (Missouri Education and Research Libraries Information Network)
catalogs the library resources of the University of Missouri - Columbia,
University of Missouri - Kansas City, University of Missouri - Rolla, and University
of Missouri - Saint Louis.
How do I connect to MERLIN?
- Go to the Health Sciences Library WWW page at: http://library.umkc.edu/hsl
- Use the "Quick Links" drop down menu and choose either:
- Search Merlin to search MERLIN materials from all
campuses
OR
- Search Merlin: UMKC Library Catalog Only to only
search UMKC materials
What journals are in the library?
- To search only UMKC materials, use the "Quick Links" menu and
choose Search Merlin: UMKC Library Catalog Only.
- On the next screen click on Journal, Magazine, and Newspaper
Titles.
- Type the name of the journal in the box and click on the Search
button.
- If we have the journal, a screen will come up with the
title, the location, the years we've held it, and the latest issue we have
received. The location choices are Miller Nichols (MNL), Health Sciences
(HSL), Dental, or Law. Be sure to look at the years that we have subscribed
to the journal, as we don't always have every year. If there is no ending
year, for example (1960- ), we have a current subscription, and there will
be a highlighted entry LATEST RECEIVED. If you click on
the words LATEST RECEIVED, it will bring up the boxes that
show the latest individual issues and if any issues are at the bindery.
- If we don't have the journal, a screen will come up
that says No matches found; nearby Journal, Magazine, and Newspaper
Titles are: and list nearby titles. The nearby titles can be handy
to look at in case you misspelled the journal title.
What books are in the Library?
- First, decide what library you want to search. If you need an item immediately,
choose your search UMKC only. If you can wait for an item, choose Search
Merlin from the drop-down menu. You can request books from other
MERLIN libraries electronically and ask that they be sent directly to the
Health Sciences Library. This electronic ordering service is called "Patron
Initiated Borrowing."
- If you know the exact title, click on Exact Title, and
if we have the book it will show up on the screen. If we
don't have the book it will say No matches found; nearby
Exact Titles are. Once again it can be helpful to look at the nearby
matches in case you might have misspelled something.
- If you don't know the name of the book, but you do have the author, click
on Author to search. If you are unsure of the title or
the author, you may search by KeyWords or Medical
Subjects (MESH).
How do I email, download or print the information?
- Click the box next to the title when you are in a list of titles. Click
on Save Marked Records. (Remember to click on Save
Marked Records on each page of records you are
marking before moving on to the next page).
- When you are finished marking all records, click on Export Saved
List at the top or bottom of your screen.
- Choose the Format of List you want. (Full display will
give you the title, author, call number and subject headings)
- Choose the manner in which you want to view your records in the Send
List To option.
- If you choose email, you'll need to supply an email
address.
- If you choose screen, the citations you selected
will be displayed on the screen and you can print them out.
- If you choose local disk, you'll need to insert a
floppy disk and save your citations to your disk.
- Click on Submit.
- If you have emailed or sent to local disk,
you will receive a message confirming receipt.
- If you have sent the citation to the screen, print
them out by using yourWeb browser's print icon.
