The Health Sciences Library has responded to student requests and will now be open on Saturdays as well as Sundays. Starting July 1, the new hours are Monday through Thursday 8 to 10 pm, Friday 8 to 5:30 pm, Saturday 9 to 5 pm, and Sunday 2 to 10 pm. We hope these hours will better meet the needs of all the students on Hospital Hill.
Thanks to everyone who participated in our use survey! We have compiled the results and here are some of the responses. Most users reported they used the library in the afternoon. Most were aware of our on-line resources and used them. The three predominant activities users reported on visits to the library were: check out a book or journal, read a journal article, or make photocopies. If you would like to see the full results you may come into the library see the display, or you may view them here on the Website. To see them on the Website your computer must have Microsoft Excel on it. This is the link to the file: charts
Michelle Beattie and Amrita Burdick, Health Sciences Library, were quoted in the "Clinical Librarians in Action" section of a recent Annals of Internal Medicine article, "Clinical Librarianship: its Value in Medical Care." (April 17, 2001 volume 134, number 8, page 719)
We want to know how and when you use the Health Sciences Library. Watch
your email for a link to the survey and please help us better serve you by
filling it out. Thanks for your help in this effort to find out how we can
best help you.
Some of our users have noticed the lack of full-text access to JAMA from the publisher's Website in the past months. This was due to a change in the IP address at the School of Medicine. The difficulty has now been ironed out and we once again have full-text access to JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association from the publisher's Website. In addition, we have full-text access to other AMA journals like the Archives series. Please visit our full-text journals page to see a complete listing of our full-text journals.
For those users who only visit the home page, be sure to notice a new icon near the center of the page called "Topic of the Month." This is a new feature at the Health Sciences Library which will focus on current topics and provide students and faculty with a list of the resources available here in the library on that topic. The handout which we have developed on the topic is available on the Website in pdf format for printing. If you are able to come to the library, you will also see a display of the items. The topic for January was pneumonia, and the topic for February is pain. The Oucher, a pain measurement tool developed by Dr. Judith Beyer of UMKC's School of Nursing, is part of the display. We invite you to come visit the display, either in person or virtually, and if you have any ideas for future topics you would like to have covered, please email Sue Sykes Berry.
The University Libraries are pleased to announce that IKON Office Solutions will provide new photocopy machines in the Miller Nichols Library (MNL), the Health Sciences Library (HSL) and the Dental Library (DL). At the same time, new networked equipment will be installed to manage printing from the libraries’ public computers.
The current Copicard system will be replaced with an improved card system
which can accept new currency and be networked to print only what each user
wishes to purchase. At the Miller Nichols Library, patrons will have the choice
of using cash or credit card to add value to the new DebitLog card; only cash
can be accepted by the equipment at the Dental and Health Sciences libraries.
Because the current Copicard will not be compatible with the new DebitLog
system, we encourage you to use the current credit on your Copicard this month,
and limit adding value to this card, which will not be useable after the new
equipment is installed. February 28, 2001 is the deadline to trade
the current value on your Copicard for the same value on a new DebitLog card.
After February 28, current Copicards will no longer be useable in the three
library sites. Questions?: University Libraries Administrative Office, 816-235-1531,
Mon.-Fri., 8am-5pm.
