Information resources in all formats to support the UMKC undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs are located primarily in the Miller Nichols Library. Medical and health sciences related materials are held at the Health Sciences and Dental Libraries. Legal materials are located in the Law Library, administered by the School of Law. The UMKC on-site collections are supplemented by access agreements with libraries, consortia, and external databases and information systems.
The overall responsibility of the Collection Development Division is to shape the evolving subject collections of the UMKC University Libraries by matching collection resources to the teaching, research, and service missions of UMKC. The Collection Development Division assists departments and schools with library assessment reports for new course proposals, COPE reviews, and accreditation reports.
The Collection Development Division includes the subject specialist librarians
who select and review materials in all information formats, manage the subject
funds of the library acquisitions budget, and provide faculty liaison services.
The Special Collections Department of the Miller Nichols
Library (including the Marr Sound Archives),
is managed by the Collection Development Division. The Collection Development
Division works closely with the Friends of the Library
on their annual gift to the Libraries and coordinates the Libraries
Gifts-in-Kind program. Subject
specialist librarians are assigned to assist the faculty of the academic
departments.
The collections of the University Libraries include books, reports, reference
materials, government publications,
musical scores, sound recordings, and the periodicals and scholarly journals
that are vital for current research at every academic level. Printed and electronic
resources in all subject fields are collected. For statistics on the collections
of the libraries see Statistical
Highlights of the Collections of the Libraries at UMKC. See University Libraries New Titles for the latest list of new acquisitions.
In addition to current materials, retrospective holdings are collected. Major research resources are available in microforms, including American and British periodicals from the 18th to the 20th century; complete runs of major newspapers extending back to the 19th century; federal and congressional documents; education research reports (ERIC); and visual documentaries, such as the Index of American Design.
Electronic resources include Internet files, CD-ROM
indexes, and other data files, including reference and full-text resources,
such as Medline, Dialog, Wilsonline, STN, LexisNexis, OCLC FirstSearch, RLIN/BIB, LexisNexis Academic,
ACM Digital Library, Project Muse, and Project ARTFL.
New online titles are announced in the News and Events section and are accessible from the list of electronic
resources.
UMKC faculty may submit Library Purchase Request cards or use the Electronic Library Purchase Form to request materials to be purchased for the UMKC University Libraries’ collections. Faculty also may submit screen printouts of entries in Books in Print or Blackwell’s New Titles Online. UMKC faculty should look at the instructions for making Requests to Purchase Library Material.
Initial funding was provided by the UMKC Student Computing Fee from 1997 to 1999.
The Project published a three volume printed union list, “Newspapers in Missouri: A Union List, 1994" that is a compilation of bibliographic and holdings records created and edited by MNP staff using the Online Union catalog and Union List Subsystems of OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc (OCLC), with supplementary materials prepared by project staff. It represents the holdings of 104 institutions in Missouri. Each institution that participated in this project has a copy of the printed union list and the information is also available in OCLC, available at libraries.
All newspapers were microfilmed and are stored at the State Historical Society
of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, located on theWeb at www.umsystem.edu/shs/.

The UMKC University Libraries are a full-member of the Center for Research Libraries (Chicago), a non-profit research consortium, whose collections are available for scholarly use through microform and facsimile archival records, major microform collections, foreign and domestic newspapers, state and some federal documents, and area studies materials from various parts of the world. For a description of the collections see the Collections section of the CRL website (www.crl.edu). The holdings of CRL (http://catalog.crl.edu) are searchable on the World Wide Web.
Within the Kansas City metropolitan area, resource sharing by area libraries is pursued to avoid costly duplication of research materials in many subject areas. Area facilities within fifteen minutes of the UMKC Volker and Hospital Hill campuses include four research libraries. Science and technological research reference sources are available at the Linda Hall Library (www.lindahall.org/), a privately-funded independent institution less than one block from the Miller Nichols Library. Linda Hall is a U.S. Patent Depository Library. In the fine arts, the research collection of the Spencer Art Reference Library (http://www.nelson-atkins.org/education/Library.cfm) of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art may be consulted on site by UMKC faculty, students, and the community. The SARL collection is especially strong in art history, Asian art, and the decorative arts. Holdings of both libraries are listed in the online catalog, LEONARDO.
UMKC medical and health sciences resources are supplemented by the nearby libraries of the University of Kansas Medical Center Archie Dykes Library, and the history of medicine collections of the Clendenning Library. The online catalogs of other local libraries are listed among the Online Resources on the Website.
UMKC faculty may request library privileges at the member institutions of the Association for Research Libraries/OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program. Exchange agreements covering students and faculty include the Missouri Information Exchange Program (MIX), the Kansas City Library Network, and the UMKC University Libraries Courtesy Card Program.

If you would like to donate a single book, sound recording or an entire collection to the libraries, please let us know so we can assist you in making plans.
Remember that according to the federal tax law donors of gifts to the UMKC Libraries and similar institutions must furnish their own appraisal value for contributions claimed as tax deductions.
If you would like to do your own research on the estimated current market value of items to be donated, the UMKC Libraries have reference works available in the Reference Department that you can consult. Prices of older books may be found in American Books Prices Current, Bookmen's Price Index, and Internet sources for example. New book prices may be checked in Books in Print.
For your convenience, a list of appraisers for those donors desiring professional assistance is provided. The inclusion of an appraiser on this list does not constitute an endorsement of the appraiser or the quality of services. As the donor, you are responsible for any charges and fees incurred for professional services contracted. Additional listings of appraisers can be found in the local Yellow Pages telephone directory, under “appraisers.” We are happy to assist you with further information if you need assistance locating additional appraisers or have any questions about gifts to the UMKC Libraries.
