Richard Henry Pratt, Indian Schools: An Exposure (1915) |
National Issues, Local Concerns: Miller Nichols Library Home to such indigenous peoples as the Kansa (Kaw), the Shawnee, and the Wyandotte, among others, the Kansas City area is rich in Native American history and culture. With almost 100,000 Native Americans currently residing in the Kansas City metropolitan area, issues that confront Native Americans at the national level remain an important local concern. Among the enduring national issues regarding Native Americans that remain local concerns are federal policy toward Native Americans, the legal status of Native American religious practices, and the success rate for Native American children in the public school system. Interested students and scholars may conduct research on these and others important issues using resources such as those selected for display as part of this exhibit. |

| With its strong holdings in the history of the American
West, the UMKC University Libraries' Special
Collections Department provides students with valuable sources for
research into a variety of issues in Native American Studies. The work
of Richard Henry Pratt, for example, is well represented in UMKC's Snyder
Collection (see illustration this page), and was instrumental in defining
the parameters of the U.S. government's boarding school program for Native
American children during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Government Documents Department supplements such historical research materials
with its collection of statistical information and reports issued by federal
agencies such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Education.
Useful materials in the reference and circulating collections supplement
the materials held in Special Collections and Government Publications, and
electronic resources such as Ethnic Newswatch provide researchers with
access to a variety of perspectives on issues of concerns to Native Americans.
Finally, the UMKC University Libraries include a number of resources for the study of local institutions with broader significance for Native American Studies, including the historic Shawnee Indian Mission in nearby Fairway, Kansas, and the Haskell Institute (now Haskell Indian Nations University) in Lawrence, Kansas. For suggestions on how to make use of the resources for Native American Studies at UMKC, please consult library staff in the Reference and Special Collections Departments. The image found at the exhibition's opening page is taken from the cover of the Bureau of Indian Affair's Art & Indian Children of the Dakotas: Book Five - An Introduction to Art & Other Ideas, by Arthur Amiotte, with illustrations by Vic Runnels (1982). The University Libraries would also like to thank Chris Gipson for his very generous loan of art work that enhanced the exhibition's display cases, and Scott Walter and Laura Bundy for their loan of periodicals and publications from their personal collections. Exhibition materials will be available for viewing from August 23 - December 18, 1999 on the first floor of the library during our regular hours of operation. Any comments regarding this exhibition may be directed to Brenda Dingley, Assistant Director for Technical Services.
