An Exhibit in Recognition of Black History Month
Miller Nichols Library
17 February - 7 May 1999
The UMKC Miller Nichols Library celebrates Black History Month by showcasing its resources for the study of African-American women's literature. Items on display for this exhibit include selections from the work of four important authors: Maya Angelou; Zora Neale Hurston; Ntozake Shange; and, Alice Walker.
4 Women Writers is being presented in conjunction with the April 1999 visit of author Alice Walker to Kansas City. Walker will present a lecture at the Unity Temple on the Plaza on April 29th. Her lecture is being sponsored by the UMKC Friends of the Library.
The portrait of Zora Neale Hurston found on the exhibit's opening page was taken from the Library of Congress' American Memory Project. The original photograph was taken by Carl van Vechten in 1938, and is part of the Carl van Vechten Photograph Collection at the Library of Congress. This photograph and others can be viewed online as part of the exhibit, Creative Americans: Portraits by Carl van Vechten, 1932-1964.
4 Women Writers will be available for viewing from February 17 - May 7, 1999 on the second floor of the library during our regular hours of operation. Any questions regarding this online exhibition site may be directed to the webmaster.
